Lawrence, born March 1997

The first thing you notice about Lawrence is his giant, beaming smile. It’s a smile that introduces him before he even has a chance to say hello. Most people leave smiling after meeting Lawrence.

Lawrence is a charming 11-year old who loves to be around people. He is extremely sociable and doesn’t like to be alone. He’s enthusiastic and funny and mixes well with kids his age and adults.

“I like to play football, basketball and video games,” he said while eyeing the rides during a recent visit to Castles and Coasters. Car racing games are the video games that really rev him up; it’s where he spent a good part of his time. He deftly guided his car through the various twists, turns and obstacles to win race after race. Being an auto racer is a possible future interest of Lawrence’s. He thinks it would be neat to roar around a track and see how fast he and his car could go. He practices now with a fleet of remote controlled cars. “My Jeep, Ferrari and Dodge are my favorites,” he said.

Lawrence was a bit tentative about riding the big roller coaster; he chose the bumper cars instead.

Lawrence is doing well in school. Math, science and social studies are the subjects he likes best. He noted that he does his homework each day when he gets home from school, before he thinks about playing or watching TV. He is excited to be going into 6 th grade this fall.

Lawrence’s case manager, Sarah, said he is a very likeable boy. She notices that he likes to be busy playing outdoors or with his remote controlled cars. He does like arts and crafts but prefers someone do them with him. Besides being very social, she said Lawrence is very open about his feelings and emotions. He will let others know what’s on his mind and has learned to warn others if they are making him mad.

Lawrence says his friends would describe him as funny and very good at sports. He likes to go swimming but doesn’t mind playing outside on hot summer days. He and his buddies listen to 50 Cent, Bow Wow and other rap artists. His can’t get enough of Chinese buffet food, especially orange chicken and rice.

His case manager, Sarah, says Lawrence really wants to find a forever family that will take the time to teach him patience and sharing. He is smart and very willing to learn. To avoid conflicts, she warns that Lawrence should be the youngest or only child in the household. He hopes to be in an active home that likes sports, camping and traveling. Lawrence says he would very much like to visit Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm. Sarah added that it’s very important for Lawrence to be able to maintain contact with his brother. She said it’s very important to Lawrence that any prospective family will be open to helping him understand and identify with his African American heritage.
