Thirteen-year-old Sarah likes animals and, apparently, they like her back. During a horseback riding lesson with instructor Sue Cherry at Saber Creek Ranch in Surprise, Sarah’s steed seemed to anticipate what the teen wanted. The ride was smooth and Sarah handled the horse well, despite not being on horseback since she was about seven years old. “I really like horses,” says Sarah, who is in seventh grade. “They are awesome. They are gentle.” Sarah says she likes animals of all kinds – especially cats – and there is a wide variety of animals to pet on the Saber Creek Ranch. In addition to horses, there are miniature donkeys, a miniature pig, a Texas longhorn and assorted poultry.
In a time when teens seem addicted to screens, Sarah admits to a passion for old-fashioned board games. “I like to play Scrabble because it helps me with my spelling,” Sarah says, adding that she also likes chess, checkers and the mystery-solving board game Clue. Sarah is a big fan of the television program Arrow, which she binges on through Netflix. She also likes Taylor Swift and playing volleyball.
Crysta Hernandez, a youth advocate with Christian Family Care, says Sarah thrives with one-on-one attention and would do best as an only child in a two-parent household. “She needs a strong female role model in her life,” Hernandez says, adding “she longs for an overall nurturing environment that can help her grow into a mature young lady.”
