Twelve-year-old Joel has been to the Phoenix Zoo three times, but he saw things – and did things – he had never done before during his fourth visit, guided by Josh Crabtree, manager of ambassador animal resources. Talkative and inquisitive, Joel had dozens of questions as he:
Meanwhile, the seventh-grader likes building things with Legos and playing football. “Football is kind of my favorite sport,” he says. “The position I like to play in football is quarterback because they don’t have to run that much.”
Joel is active and social, says youth advocate Monique Cabelka. He is also intensely curious, often spending time doing a deep dive into researching subjects that grab his attention. Joel would thrive in a forever family in which he is the only child or the youngest child, Cabelka says. “The ideal family for Joel would be a family that has had experience in working with kids,” she adds.
