Details are important to 13-year-old Delilah. She knows that it is the little details – shading under the nose, the pencil strokes creating the illusion of texture – that bring a character on paper to life. So, she was excited to learn new drawing techniques from Alyssa Martinez, an instructor with Art Boss, a company that specializes in teaching the techniques and styles of Anime, Manga and comics. Art is Delilah’s passion. “Honestly, I’ve loved to draw since I was very, very little,” she says. “I loved to pick up crayons and scribble all over the paper. “Drawing is my method of unwinding,” she adds.
The eighth-grader also loves to write. Sometimes her writing is just venting using the Google Docs program. Sometimes her writing is more ambitious. She is more than 9,000 words into a novel about two girls – one part of a very large family, the other part god, and part demon. Delilah hopes to someday merge her passions by creating comic books. “I like to draw and I like to write and when you put the two together, you get a comic book,” she says. Comic book creator would be a sideline, however.
“When I grow up,” Delilah says, “I would like to teach for the visually impaired because I’m visually impaired and I want to help people in the same boat as me.” Delilah says she really wants to be part of a forever family with a mom and a dad, but that it’s important that she maintain her relationship with her biological grandmother. “I would like a nerdy kind of family that is into video games and things like that,” she says. “I want a family that is good to each other.”
